Microsoft security update (KB2286198) for Windows 7/Server 2008/Vista hangs or causes a BSOD on restart

KB Solution ID: SOLN2523|Last Revised: September 25, 2014

If you are experiencing a system hang or blue screen error after attempting to install Microsoft security update (KB2286198), you will need to update your ESET security product. This issue is due to a potential conflict with the Windows update and ESET NOD32 Antivirus and ESET Smart Security. Downloading a new ESET virus signature update (version 5338 and later) will resolve this issue. To update your ESET security product, follow the steps below:

  1. Open ESET Smart Security or ESET NOD32 Antivirus. How do I open my ESET product?

  2. Click Update from the main menu on the left and click Update virus signature database in the main program window on the right.

  3. The Update status should read: Version of virus signature database: 5338 (20100803). Verify that you have version 5338 or later.

  4. Restart the Windows update process. Visit Microsoft's Windows 7 Solution Center for more information on receiving Windows updates.

NOTE:

If your computer receives updates through Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), then you may need to restart WSUS and BITS using the following procedure: http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc708426%28WS.10%29.aspx
