Client workstations not updating from ESET Remote Administrator Server update mirror (5.x)

Issue

  • License file (.lic) was mistakenly uploaded on the client workstation running ESET endpoint products as well as on the server running ESET Remote Administrator
  • Client workstations are unable to retrieve updates from the ESET Remote Administrator Server
  • Conflict between the ESET RA HTTP Server service and the ESET HTTP Server service on the server
  • More than one mirror server has been configured on the same machine to provide virus signature database updates for the antivirus clients (this creates a conflict because they are sharing the same port)

 

Solution

A new version has been released

Version 6 of ESET Remote Administrator (ERA) and ESET business products were released in North America December 11th, 2014. This article applies to version 5.x and earlier ESET business products. For information about what's new in the latest version and how to upgrade, see the following articles:

I. Disable mirror controls on the client workstation

  1. Open the main program window by clicking the ESET icon  next to the system clock or by clicking Start All Programs ESET ESET Endpoint Security or ESET Endpoint Antivirus.
  1. Press the F5 key to open the Advanced Setup window.
     
  2. Expand Update and then click General Setup.

  3. Click the Mirror tab and deselect the check box next to Provide update files via internal HTTP server.

  4. Next, deselect the check box next to Create update mirror and click OK to continue. Continue to part II below.

II. Remove the license file(s) from the client workstation

  1. While still in the Advanced Setup tree, expand Tools and click Licenses.
  1. In the Licenses window, select the license entry (or entries) and click Remove. Click OK to save your changes. Continue to part III below.

III. Verify that all ESET services are running correctly

  1. Click Start   Run and type services.msc
  1. In the Services window, locate the ESET RA HTTP Server and verify that the Status is set to Started, and that Startup Type is set to Manual.

    • If this service is stopped, start it by right-clicking ESET RA HTTP Server and selecting Start from the context menu.

    • If you are unable to restart the service, it may be due to port 2221 being used by another application. To resolve this issue, reset the server by restarting it, or try assigning the ESET Remote Administrator HTTP Server a different port number. It will be necessary to change the port number in the ESET Remote Administrator Server/Console as well as on client workstations. See Changing ESET RA HTTP server ports below for step-by-step instructions.

  1. Locate the ESET HTTP Service, and verify that the Status is set to Stopped (blank), and that the Startup Type is set to Manual.

  1. Open the ESET Remote Administrator Console.
  1. Click Tools   Server options and click the Updates tab. Select the check box next to Clear update cache, and click Update now.

  1. Once the update executes successfully, click OK. Your clients should now be able to retrieve updates from your internal ESET Remote Administrator Server.

 


Troubleshooting: Change ESET RA HTTP server ports (ESET Remote Administrator Console)

  1. Click Tools   Server options and click the Updates tab.
  1. In the HTTP server port field, enter a new port number (i.e. http://servername:8080) and click OK.

  1. Change the Update server settings for client workstation via Policy Manager. Click Tools    Policy Manager.
  1. Select your Server Policy (or your main policy for all your client workstations) and click Edit.
  1. Expand Windows desktop v5   Update   Profile and select Update server.
  1. Select <Custom update server> from the drop-down menu and then enter the new port number (i.e. http://servername:8080) and save the configuration change. The client workstations assigned to this policy will inherit these settings the next time they report back ESET Remote Administrator.
