Activate and configure Anti-Theft protection in ESET Smart Security

KB Solution ID: SOLN3158|Last Revised: August 26, 2014

What is Anti-Theft?
In our everyday travels from home to work and other public places, our personal devices are constantly at risk of being lost or stolen. If your device is ever lost or stolen, ESET Anti-Theft lets you monitor device usage and track your missing device anywhere in the world  using localization by IP address, helping you retrieve your device and protect personal data.

How does Anti-Theft work?
Once installed on your device, ESET Smart Security integrates with the ESET Anti-Theft web interface. From your my.eset.com account you can manage the state of your device to trigger monitoring if it is ever lost or stolen. When a device is declared lost or stolen, ESET Smart Security automatically begins relaying information from your device to your account, no matter where in the world your device is. Any time your missing device accesses the Internet, ESET Smart Security sends updated screenshots, webcam images and GPS coordinates to the Anti-Theft web interface.

  1. On my.eset.com, click Create new account. It is also possible to create a new my.eset.com account during the installation process. If you registered during installation, then you should have received an email with a confirmation link that, when clicked, activates your my.eset.com account. You can use the same email and password combination to login for this step.

Important! Your my.eset.com account username and password

The credentials for your my.eset.com account are different from the ESET-issued Username and Password (for example, EAV-12345678) that you received after purchasing your product. Do not use your ESET-issued Username and Password to sign in to your my.eset.com account.

    • In the registration form, please provide the following information in the ESET Anti-Theft web interface. All fields are mandatory:

Email – it is not necessary to register the account to the same email address used for ESET product license registration. Two accounts can not be registered to one email address.

Password – a minimum of 8 characters, must contain letters and numbers. A lost password recovery function is available for the account.

For both methods it is necessary to enter your account credentials at my.eset.com and then click Sign in

Important!

If you are unsure of the email address you entered, refer to the Home menu in your ESET product and the email address used will be listed next to Anti-Theft. How do I open the main program window of my Windows ESET product?

  1. After signing in using your my.eset.com account credentials, type the name of the computer or device into the Computer name field (as you want it to be displayed in the my.eset.com list of devices).

NOTE:

ESET Smart Security allows you to remove devices, disable ESET Anti-theft and deactivate the association of any device with your my.eset.com account from the program. To do so, open the main program window and click Setup Computer Anti-Theft Enabled Disable permanently.

ESET Anti-Theft device management

All devices associated with your my.eset.com account are accessible from the Home tab of the my.eset.com web interface. Click View details to manage a device's status, activity, diagnostics, messages and other settings. For more information please refer to the my.eset.com help pages.

In case of theft or loss

If you suspect that your registered device has been lost or stolen, go to my.eset.com, log in to your my.eset.com account and select the device or computer that is missing. Click My device is missing.

After clicking My device is missing, a device status change confirmation message will appear in a pop-up window with information about the following actions:

  • Using default settings, ESET Smart Security will begin monitoring the device immediately.
  • Monitoring will continue for up to 14 days.
  • Email notifications will be sent to the user's email 5 days, 3 days and 1 day before the expiration of this period. 5 days before the expiration of the missing state a message will also be displayed on your my.eset.com account.

The following actions will also be taken automatically:

  • Email notifications will be sent stating that the device status has been set to missing.
  • When the missing computer or device goes online, ESET Smart Security will record information on regular intervals. This data can be viewed in the Activity tab of your my.eset.com account.
  • The missing device will automatically restart within three minutes of going online. A Phantom Account will be created for the missing device and a fake user account auto-login will be set.

What is a Phantom Account?

The purpose of the Phantom Account is to protect your real user accounts. In ESET Anti-Theft setup, you are prompted to password-protect all your accounts. A Phantom Account requires no password, and therefore is easily accessible for the person with your device.

The Phantom Account:

  • is automatically opened when the missing device starts (while your actual accounts are hidden)
  • collects data on the device location, webcam pictures and screenshots
  • sends the data to your my.eset.com account

How to revert the status of a device to normal

To revert a device to a normal state, click I recovered my device. The device will reboot and your normal user account will be re-enabled. After selecting I recovered my device, a device status change confirmation message will appear in a pop-up window which will include additional summary information.
