KB Solution ID: SOLN532|Last Revised: April 15, 2014

Issue

  • ESET icon disappears after installation
  • egui.exe program is conflicting with another program that prevents ESET from creating its icon, or is running from the wrong key in the registr
  • Issue with graphics card

Solution

Conflicting program

The egui.exe program that launches the ESET icon may be conflicting with another program that is starting at the same time and preventing the egui.exe program from launching the icon. In this case, follow the steps below for your operating system.

Windows XP

  1. Click Start My Computer and navigate to the following folder: C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

  2. Right-click and select New Shortcut from the context menu.

  3. Click Browse and navigate to the following folder (for your version), or enter the following location (including quotations) in the Type the location of the item field and then click Next:

    "C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\egui.exe" or "C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Smart Security\egui.exe"

  4. Enter egui in the Type a name for this shortcut field and click Finish.

  5. Restart your computer. The ESET icon should appear next to the system clock.

Windows Vista/7

  1. Click Start Computer and navigate to the following folder: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

If you are running a 64-bit version of Windows and the icon does not reappear after you have completed the steps above, the egui.exe program may be running from the wrong registry key. If this is the case, continue to the steps below.

Incorrect registry key

If the egui.exe program is running from the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run registry key, the ESET icon may not appear. It should be located under the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Wow6432Node/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run registry key, where 64-bit applications are started.

  1. Open the Windows Registry Editor by clicking Start Run and typing regedit in the Open field.

  2. Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Wow6432Node/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run.

  3. Click Edit New String Value. Name the value egui. Right-click the value and select Modify from the context menu. Enter the following string (including quotations) in the Value data field:

    "C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET Smart Security\egui.exe" /hide /waitservice or "C:\Program Files\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus\egui.exe" /hide /waitservice

  4. Delete the egui.exe entry in the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Run registry key.

  5. Restart your computer. The ESET icon should appear next to the system clock.

If you have completed all of the above steps and the icon does not reappear, there may be an issue with your computer’s graphics card. In this case, continue to the steps below.
